Week 9 Super 7

As you know by now, no changes were made this week.

Why isn’t Intetboro ahead of Springfied? I’ve now seen both teams, and even though Interboro proved it was better back in Week1, I like Springfield’s entire package, so to speak, a little bit more than Interboro’s. Defensively, what they did vs. Ridley impressed me a lot. It doesn’t mean I think Springfield is leaps and bounds better than Interboro. However, I do not believe Interboro can beat either Ridley or GV.

Again, and I’ve said this so many times already, afterRidley and EA, it’s kind of anybody’s guess. In my opinion, they are by far the two best teams in Delco.

1. Ridley (8-0)
2. Episcopal (7-0)
3. Haverford (7-1)
4. Springfield (6-2)
5. Garnet Valley (6-2)
6. O’Hara (5-3)
7. Interboro (7-1)

Under Consideration: Academy Park, Glen Mills, Strath Haven, Bonner-Prendergast, Haverford School.

  1. Like I said, I will not complain about Matt’s rankings.

I understand Ridley has a stronger strength of schedule than EA.

But, they did just barely beat a Springfield team that lost to Interboro – and EA beat INT 41-0.

However, I would still have Ridley #1 on strength of schedule so far.

However, on Friday EA plays a Malvern team that is ranked higher in SE PA polls than anyone Ridley has played.

I think it will be a great game and whoever shows up to play with the best game plan and the most determination will win.

If EA wins that game – and especially if it wins it handily, a very sound argument can be made for EA then being #1.

If EA beats MP (not counting my eggs before they are hatched – all bets are off if they don’t), it will be interesting to see the Super 7 next week.

    • I’m having a hard time with the Central League. Obviously Ridley is number one, but they have a suspect offense. Springfield beats GV, and can only manage a FG against Ridley. GV looks awesome at times, yet has a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot. Haverford has overwhelming offensive firepower but seems to want to give up almost as much. Casting aside wins and losses, how do these top level teams rank based upon general observation????

  2. Matt please explain your rankings of Springfield still ahead of Interboro. Interboro beat them week one and has had just as tough if not tougher schedule. Interboro has beaten Springfield (6-2), Upper Moreland(5-3), Penn Charter (3-3), Prep Charter (5-3), Glenn Mills (3-4), Chichester (2-6) and Penn Wood(0-8). To give an overall record of 24-28.
Springfield has beaten Harriton(3-5), Lower Merion (0-8), Upper Darby(3-5), Garnet Valley(6-2), Radnor (0-8), Penncrest (3-5) to give an overall record of 15-33. If you want the win of Garnet as the statement win for Springfield then you have to give Interboro the benefit of the doubt with the win over Springfield. Interboro has two tough tests and are 1-1 and Springfield is 1-2 in their tests. The only way they should be ranked higher is if they beat interboro in districts. Please explain to the board how a loss does not move a team with a better record and the win head to head up. Thanks.

    • A win/loss in week one for any team is as telling as a professional poker players’ mannerisms. Teams are so incredibly under prepared, overwhelmed, and immature at the beginning of the season that it’s difficult to put any stock in success, or lack there of, in week one results. In week one last year Lasalle beat North Penn, who the beat Lasalle in the quad-A eastern final. It’s the same logic as Interboro fans stating the 41-0 EA loss would not be the same if the two teams played today; it would be much more competitive. Well, since rankings are pure opinion, maybe Matt feels that over the last 8 weeks Springfield has improved to a point that surpasses Interboro. Plus, no offense, District One 3A football is not very competitive in comparison to 3A districts arpund the state. However, D1 4A ball is extremely competitive in comparison. At least Springfield is forced to play some 4A schools in the Central League, rather than beating up on the Del Val competition, which isn’t very good at all. Springfield beat GV a few weeks back, and GV would man handle anyone that interboro has defeated so far.

My OPINION. Why care anyway? Rankings are speculative and objective only to the ranker. The post season will let it all play out.

      • Relax Big_Bug, only playing Devil’s Advocate. I was serious though about “my opinion”. Who really cares? I could see if this were old-school college football and the associated press named a champion, but here in the PIAA we have a post season system that will let it all play out. Everything else is purely entertainment based, speculative, and, as I said, really only objective and evident to the person creating the rankings.

    • Hey Mike, Thank’s for picking up where I left off. I just wasn’t going to post anymore on the Super 7 because I have yet to get an answer that I can swallow completely before puking it back up. But good luck, Ill be checking back to see if you get an answer from the person whom you asked the question. For your amusement go back and check some of my posts from previous Super 7′s this year. You won’t get any answers but you’ll get a few laughs

      • Matt does an awesome job of promoting high school football in Delaware County and for that we all should be grateful. With that being said, yes Interboro should absolutely be ranked #4. With 2 losses, including one head-head with Interboro, there is no rational explanation or reason why Interboro is not ranked ahead of Springfield. The Haverford-GV will decide the fate of those two teams and the EA-Malvern game will decide whether EA goes to #1 or drops to #3. If EA beats Malven they should go to #1 until Ridley wins District 1. EA has taken care of everyone – without one game being decided in the 2nd half – that’s what really good teams do. O’Hara will get an opportunity to prove themselves in the playoffs, but as of now, they have 3 losses and two extremely narrow escapes of Haverford School and Bonner.

      • I agree with you Tom, Matt does do a good job promoting HS football and w/o this blog what would we do, right? Besides, Interboro always prefers to stay under the radar if they can. But thanks for the rank up to #4 though.

    • @John – no post season to let it play out if you support and Inter-Ac school.

Sure it’s all opinion and all fun, but for EA it won’t be sorted out in the post season, plus 3A and 4A will still not be apples and apples as they don’t play each other.

      • And yes, I have posted several times before I would have Interboro higher but I’m not going to rehash it,

  3. Is this super 7 that important to you????????? J/W if u are a sports fan you would know it dosen’t always matter how high or low your ranked all that matters is when it counts u win -playoffs- no matter if its high school, college, or the pros top ranked teams dont always prosper now if you just want to see EA on top cuse it looks good to you I understand other than that it wouldent matter to me as long as they continued to win and they win when it matters for all I care they(Ridley/ EA) could be number 8,9 in the super 7 with a .500 team ranked higher than them if their winning in the playoffs Im not worrying about power rankings, needless to say Ridley’s earned the right to always be at the top of the super 7 for those who worry about rankings until Strath Haven stop producing machine like athletes them and Ridley were the only teams that has been consistantly good over the years and thats something you cant argue so if Ridley is always ranked higher than EA or who ever else in the super 7 maybe its because they earned it because of their resume just my thoughts not harm ment

    • I posted my argument on EA above. I just said they should be considered for #1 if they beat Malvern and I also backed it with similar opponents (I did not demand #1 or shout for it b/c I see Ridley and EA as very closely matched having seen them both play where it is really hard to say who is better and I prefer to be objective), and I even argued for Ridley having a better strength of schedule to this point – agreeing they should be #1 this week even though they just beat a Springfield team by only 7-3 that lost to INT while EA beat INT 41-0.

I thought that was a fair and unbiased post even though I am an EA supporter. I don’t thump my chest over my team. I try and be objective.

What I will disagree with from your post is that a team should be ranked higher based on having a history of success in previous years. I can see that playing a role in ranking the first week or two of the season, but as the season progresses and things get sorted it out, it should be all on this season.

Rank one team higher than another based on any objective comparison from this season, but to include past success in previous seasons makes no logical sense to me.

      • So GV should be ranked #1 because they won the CL last year?

And that did work to their favor early this year. They were highly touted in early polls this year based on the previous year and some returning talent but now they have two losses and have slipped (still a dangerous team, though).

Previous years mean nothing. If they did, Ridley would not be tops in the CL this year based on not winning it last year.

Honestly, basing this year’s ranking on last year is inane, but if you agree with that, go for it,

Are you the poster who said Ridley would beat EA 100 out of 100 games, or is that someone else?

Ridley is a really good team, but let’s be realistic, no team is without its weaknesses.

I wish EA had a superstar or two, a bigger line (though I think their line plays great and you don’t need to be that big running a spread – you need to be athletic, so 210, 230, 230, 235 and 275 is just fine) and more big game experience. Also wish their best linebacker and and 10 YPC fullback was not just lost for the season with a sprained ankle.

Are you willing to admit Ridley has anything to work on? Perhaps some things on offense?

The closest team I see in D1-4A in regards to style of play on offense to EA is DTE. They run the spread very well and a have QB who can throw the ball and some very good receivers like EA.

While it certainly would not be a true comparison, I’d be interested to see DTE and Ridley play in the districts. I think it would be a great game and would give us a feel for how Ridley would handle a spread like EA runs. Ridley has an awesome defense. Arguably the best in D1-4A against the run. If they have a weakness on defense (and I don’t think it is a great one) it is against the pass.

    • I am a Bucs fan and I have been arguing their place in the Super 7 but for real it doesn’t really mean anything. The playoffs are what counts. I think it’s really nothing more than just a respect thing everybody want’s their teams to be recognized, including me. But the Super 7 is just Matt’s opinion and it gives us a chance to blog to one another.

  4. e a should never be above ridley under any circumstances! the poster said if they win this game they should jump up what, now if you win your one big game you get moved to one. thats real fair! so they dominated in the first half, who couldnt!? look at that schedule ! NOT saying they arent good or dont have a great qb, or play good as a team cause they are, but come on i will have this argument all day long god i wish ridleys schedule looked like that im not bashing just being very very honest the schedule is what it is and with that one you better have done all this stuff on them try playing gv away in front of all those people or springfield in front of thousands. hav, harriton etc and beating them all, THATS what good teams do and yes matt has it right(at least with 1and 2 -you guys can battle the rest out amongst yourselves lol) and does do a great job providing us with something to do instead of our honey do lists lol

    • You guys all brag about these teams can we remember that Interboro and AP have handled the “central leagues best” when they were held to the challenge and AP did it fairly easy….Interboro and AP should be given more credit where they both deserve it……just saying

  5. andy i gave ea their credit and for the millionth time its only their schedule ive ever talked about and criticized, they just flat out dont play anyone and yes ridley has things to work on as do all teams like their situational play calling for example and maybe a little more consistancy across the board i differ that their pass d is a weakness… their entire secondary has 2 or more picks. have you seen crowley and smoluk ( aka the mike and mike show) play pass d? they are pretty good. they have faced some good qbs havs, gvs and even harriton has a d1 qb and in fact fared pretty well !i dont talk about playoffs till they start as i believe that angers the football gods lol so mums the word until the tourny commences then its game on! also i want to add im a rooter for ap and interboro( except 11/24 of course) and think they both have good squads ,very competitive. im not a hater just very honest

  6. Ap last year handled Springfield easy best team last year in playoffs interior beat em last year ap and interboro will do it again this year in the playoffs ap is all ridley guys now remember that those coaches turned the program around their there to win stop turning urn head before they turn to the year to year program as the best in Delco …….I’ve made my point

    • In 5 years Ap will be on another level were they can compete with the best of the central league best every year. Ap always had skilled players but never the coaching to put it all together until Coach Vo. Int Bucs has been on the down side since 02 they went from losing like 3 game in five years (1998-2003) to leaving 4A and down sizing to 3A all I wanna know is y ?don’t say school size cause your school is the same.

      • Vo has done an amazing job. And, yes, he’s a Ridley guy.
Fact is — and I DO NOT WANT this to turn into an Interboro/AP screaming match — AP, for the sake of the program, needs to beat Interboro next week. I’d argue it’s the biggest game in school history… in ANY sport.

      • Well, just get the accurate enrollment and that should answer your question. Buc’s have been down the past 2 years not retaining the Del-Val title, that’s all. This year they are beast, and poised to take take it back this Friday night. These bad-boys want the title back in Lennox’s hands and there will be no stopping them!

      • Besides, after AP measly squeeks past Glen Mills this past Friday, must have them scared a little bit that Buc’s dismantled GM in week six 20-0. AP should succumb to the battle fatigue Interboro will put them through. Emotionally, AP knows the Buc’s win they just aren’t sure by how much.

  7. Matt after going to AP how can you say that the Interboro AP is the biggest game ever in any sport for AP? AP has had some very good basketball teams and baseball teams and even football teams, Several have been in the playoffs. Please dont put all them down iwth your statement from a AP all sport supporter.

    • Frank,

I understand, there’s a rich history of great athletes who came through AP. I’m not trying to downplay that at all.

Interboro is AP’s biggest rival. I think we can agree on that.

I’m not putting down all AP sports with my statement, but if you can point to a bigger game, then we can have fun arguing. I know, they beat Springfield last year, won a playoff game for the first time, etc. And I know AP has had great basketball teams and won league titles in the 80s and 90s in football. I get that.

Considering that football is the top sport at AP right now (with kudos to volleyball), and it’s Interboro they have to beat, I think it’s the biggest game in the post-Sharon Hill days of AP athletics. It’s certainly debatable, but in no way am I trying to downplay the accomplishments of other AP sports teams.

If you ever went to AP, you would know that beating Interboro was top priority. I played sports there; I know what it’s like.

The Del Val title is on the line. AP has a team that matches up well with Interboro, just like last year. I’ve been told by coaches and reporters that AP is the superior team. Here’s another chance to show it.

Sort of unrelated, but I wrote last year on this blog about the lack of fan/student support for AP football. I would like to think there will be a pretty good turnout on South Ave. tomorrow. If your an AP alumnus, and still live in the general area, there’s no excuse not to attend.

  8. Them teams from Springfield and Marple sure do have a habit of dissapointing, don’t they?
Ea #1, Ridley #2, Interboro #3 Go Bucs!!!!!!!

      • I’m with you Buc_Alum. Dry would be nice. But as I’ve posted several times if buc’s open the pass game and target Everton, Simmons and Fentress they win 38-20. Thats with 20+ passes. With a Lennox (run-first then pass in crisis) game plan Buc’s lose 21-15
