Old news: Oregon RB shatters rushing record

I’ve been trying to get this in my Notebook for the last two weeks, so I figured I would just throw it on here.

Earlier this month Thomas Tyner of Aloha High School (Oregon) rushed for 644 yards and 10 touchdowns on 38 carries…. in one game..

(It’s an old-school rule in journalism never to use caps or exclamation points, but to hell with it)

THAT’S 16.9 YARDS PER CARRYy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow.

According to the National High School Sports Record Book, it’s the third-highest, single-game mark of all time.

Oh, and Tyner did this on his 18th birthday. Pretty cool.

In 1978 Vincent Clark of Darby Twp. High School set the Delco single-game rushing mark against Yeadon. Clark’s 438-yard performance may never be matched.

The closest to come within that record was 2010 Daily Times Player of the Year Matt Craig, the best running back I’ve ever covered (my history covering high school sports spans six years, so take it for it’s worth). Craig blasted Conestoga for 324 yards.

  1. Immediately after reading the stats my son completed the sentence with “in a season”. You should have seen his face when I said in one game
