Winpea to transfer from Upper Darby

UPDATE 8/23/12 1:15 p.m.

According to an Upper Darby official, Upper Darby won the appeal with the PIAA, meaning Sonkarly Winpea will be allowed to transfer to Bonner-Prendergast but he’ll be unable to play football.

The Daily Times regrets the error made in the the original post which stated Winpea would suit up for Bonner this fall. Upper Darby contested that Winpea was transferring primarily for athletic reasons.

More details to come.

ORIGINAL POST:

Winpea would transfer from Upper Darby, where he racked up 666 yards on 150 carries (4.4 ypc) a season ago.

Because the transfer had yet to be approbated as of Tuesday afternoon, Bonner coach Greg Bernhardt wouldn’t go into too much detail on-record regarding Winpea’s impending arrival.

“We hope to get get him in here and playing for us soon,” Bernhardt said.

Bernhardt added that while Winpea would have to learn Bonner’s system in a relatively short period of time, the expectation is that Winpea would be the Friars’ primary running back.

Bernhardt said that Winpea approached him in April about making the move to Bonner.

  1. It is a shame that Upper Darby is willing to jeopardize this student athlete’s carreer by fighting this. Stuff like this happens all the time and the REAL Upper Darby comes out of the admin’s in that school. rediculous!!!

    • Chris,

I have to agree. I understand why Upper Darby would appeal this (Winpea isn’t leaving the school district, after all) but I think they are doing a disservice to the young man.

The PIAA agreed that Winpea was leaving purely for athletics. That cant happen. Right or wrong, that’s just the way it is.

  2. It is a shame, It is not like Bonner/Prendie and Upper Darby will see each other in a regular season or playoff game this season. Let him go! I see the rule aspect of it, but it appears that U.D. is acting as if it is a scorned lover. Shame!
